Why you will only understand AEB if you have read the Common Ground.
The Common Ground is our user interface. The fact that its latest revision was a very intense process is the best description of what makes us tick.
The Common Ground is our user interface. The fact that its latest revision was a very intense process is the best description of what makes us tick.
At some point deep in the discussion about whether we should say “ivory tower” or “back room” (in the end we decided to use both terms), Torsten says: “After all, this whole thing is not a cheap endeavor.”
I look around. That's true. Apart from me, there must be 15 people sitting here discussing the texts of the new Common Ground, which we developed together in workshops. People from company management. People who were already here when AEB still had 50 employees and new software releases were installed on site at the customer's premises by floppy disk or CD. People who have significantly shaped our company, readjusted its direction, developed our most successful products, and implemented our biggest projects.
But also people who are just starting to work at AEB and who have decided that their sphere of activity also includes the Common Ground. Who have gained experience in different industries, different areas of expertise, and with other employers. Software developers, sales managers, business developers, marketing experts.
We discuss our texts together, on an equal footing, and according to the consensus principle. And sometimes, that can be as exhausting (and expensive) as it sounds. It means: We work our way through the wording and only stop doing so when everyone can at least accept the result. Sentences are broken down and reassembled, terms are negotiated, deleted, and combined. And in the end, we have to make sure that after all the dismantling and reassembling of sentences, the result can still be easily read and understood.
The resulting text describes how we work together at AEB. Which values we live by – and why. Why we do what we do, why we do it the way we do, and what guides us. It is not just a set of values, but the access to our internal operating system. It is the user interface for AEB OS (Operating System) and is located where hierarchy levels, command chains, and career ladders would traditionally be found. It is supplemented by statements from employees who share their personal perspectives on the world of AEB.
When applicants explain why they chose AEB, two reasons are at the top of the list: They feel that we do what we do with real passion. And they appreciate how we work together.
What makes AEB AEB is not only expressed in the text of the new Common Ground – but also in its creation process. In the composition of this group, which brings together very diverse people to discuss on an equal footing. In the result, which becomes so good and accurate (if I may be so bold as to praise our own work here) exactly because we have integrated many perspectives on each individual topic. And because we have all put our convictions into it and brought them together.
When we describe how we work together at AEB to people outside of the company, a frequent reaction is this: “You can afford this because you are successful.”
I'm convinced it's the other way around: We are successful because of how we work together.
