Challenge
When Aesculap opened its state-of-the-art logistics center in Tuttlingen, Germany, it faced the challenge of managing up to 2,500 daily shipments across the globe. These shipments range from individual surgical tools to full hospital kits and military field hospitals — sometimes up to 10,000 order line items in one project. While SAP® handled order processing, it lacked the shipping flexibility Aesculap needed. The company required a logistics solution that could handle a wide variety of packing stations — from small-parts consignments to heavy-duty or project shipments — and that could integrate tightly with SAP® while offering customization for customer-specific delivery needs and seamless connections to carriers and customs authorities.
Aesculap implemented AEB’s Shipping and Export Filing solutions, fully integrated into SAP®. The software supports 28 packing stations across the logistics center, with five different types tailored to shipment size and complexity. Manual tasks like packing box selection are enhanced by automation: weight is transferred automatically, and shipping labels and delivery notes print instantly. For exports outside the EU, AEB’s Export Filing communicates directly with German customs via ATLAS — all from within SAP®. Carrier integration is fast and easy, and smaller configuration changes can be made by in-house IT staff, offering agility and control.
Result
With AEB’s solutions in place, Aesculap has standardized its global shipping processes while remaining flexible to meet customer-specific needs. Shipping documents and export declarations are automated, and every item is traceable to its package. The company has achieved an impressively low error rate of just 0.14%. Carriers are electronically connected, ensuring same-day dispatch for orders received by 4:30 p.m. The seamless integration into SAP® ensures stable data flow and high productivity. The result is a highly efficient logistics operation that delivers global reliability with local adaptability.
