After the end of the transition period on December 31, 2020, trade between the UK and the EU will change. This will affect both import and export procedures. UK-based companies are advised to start the necessary preparations now to avoid supply chain disruptions and delays with your EU business partners.
The first step is to get informed on what you need to do to ensure that you are ready to continue trade with your partners in the EU after Brexit.
From January 1, 2021, you will need to submit export and import declarations when trading with the EU. Depending on the nature of your goods and the amount of exports and imports you have to handle, these processes may be difficult and time-consuming. Therefore, you will have to decide on how to manage your customs processing.
Manage your customs declarations yourself.
Let your freight forwarder take care of your customs declarations.
If you decide on handling your export processes yourself when trading with the EU, there are several initial steps to be considered. For example, you need to apply for an EORI number, find out the commodity codes of your goods, investigate if licence requirements apply, and register for NES, and for access to CHIEF.
