Trade with the EU after the transition period

Three options how to organize trade with the EU

Since January 1, 2021, you need to submit export and import declarations for trade with the EU. Depending on the nature of your goods and the amount of exports and imports you have to handle, these processes may be difficult and time-consuming. Therefore, you will have to decide on how to manage your customs processing.

These are the three options you have for trade with the EU:

Self-filing

Manage your customs declarations yourself.

Freight forwarder

Let your freight forwarder take care of your customs declarations.

Customs broker

Hand over export and import filing to a customs broker.

Self-filing: Submit your own export declarations

If you decide on handling your export processes yourself for trade with the EU, there are several initial steps to be considered. For example, you need to apply for an EORI number, find out the commodity codes of your goods, investigate if licence requirements apply, and register for NES, and for access to CHIEF.

Self-filing: Submit your own import declarations

If you are new to this, AEB's step-by-step guide will help you get started with self-filing for a standard import procedure. You will learn which preparatory steps are required, e.g. where to apply for an EORI number or how to deal with import VAT.
