A look behind the scenes of a whale of a project

Weeks of concentrated manual work have resulted in a giant whale made of fabric - an impressive piece of art and technology. It was produced in a complex process on three industrial machines. While two machines tirelessly assembled the main body, the third produced all the brackets and reflective strips. The project was characterized by precision, improvisation - and occasional surprises.

5 facts about Waldo Whale

  • Material in bulk:
Approximately 320 running meters of white fabric and around 200 running meters of silver fabric were sewn together to create the whale - this corresponds to a total area of 780 square meters.

  • Thread consumption & machine performance:
An estimated 8 rolls of 600 meters of thread each were used - a total of around 4,800 meters. Despite the high load, no needles broke, but six needles were replaced as scheduled during the course of the work.

  • Structure consisting of 338 parts:
The whale consists of exactly 338 individual parts. Each one of them was numbered during cutting to ensure error-free assembly - a crucial requirement for such a complex structure.

  • Hidden pitfalls while sewing:
During the sewing process, sometimes several meters were sewn without thread - a mistake that only becomes apparent on closer inspection when the bobbin thread is empty. This led to repetitive work and required maximum concentration.

  • Test run with a WOW effect:
Only during the test run when the whale was assembled in a specially rented concert hall did it become clear whether the entire construction would work. The air was full of anticipation and excitement - and the moment the whale stood upright full size for the first time was a real highlight for everyone involved.
