The Pack Expo and CPP (Converting and Packaging Printing) 2008 shows were held in Chicago last week. The strong attendance at the shows illustrates that, despite a weakening economy, manufacturers continue to innovate and evaluate the newest packaging technologies. AEB held a seminar on Electron Beam Sterilization for Aseptic Packaging - downloadable presentation is available below.
We witnessed a growing interest in in-line electron beam sterilization for a wide range of food & beverage and pharmaceutical aseptic packaging including:
- Sterile Blister Packaging of Prefilled Syringes
- Cold-fill for beverages in PET Bottles and Drink Pouches
- Shelf stable form-fill-seal cups
- Bricks and gable tops
With all of these applications, manufacturers were drawn to the electron beams' ability to sterilize at line speeds while eliminating/avoiding chemical sterilants, rinse water, and process heat. These new processes offer significant sustainability, productivity, and economic advantages over traditional methods.
