The excitement and buzz at Drinktec 2009 in Munich Germany echoed the broader themes of a slowly recovering economy and food and beverage packaging industry.  With business starting to expand once again, brand owners, copackers and equipment suppliers are looking for innovative new technologies in order to gain a competitive advantage.  Sustainability and reduction in chemical use continue to be front and center.  With rising awareness from brand owners, retailers, and consumers, the industry is looking to deliver more sustainable alternatives.  With aseptic packaging of juice, dairy drinks, and functional beverages among the highest growth segments, there is particular interest in alternative package sterilization technologies that minimize energy and water consumption while delivering the performance requirements for new aseptic products.

Also gathering attention was the unveiling of GEA Procomac's Steribeam system for closure sterilization.  This system uses 2 AEB e250 emitters for high speed, chemical free sterilization of beverage bottle caps.
